VOCAB OF THE WEEK

It was a very stressful effort before I could be here typing in blogger.com. 
My lappy was 'hospitalized' ... and the Gary-like connnection really ANNOYS me. 
See how big that is ? erghh...
So, this is it.. 
vocabs of the week which I compile together because of those silly reasons.. mwahaha -,-'

1.       Pretext : n , a false reason used to justify an action.
- He must have found some pretext for giving her an injection

2.       Rage : n, violent anger / continue with a great force (all the rage very popular)
- He looked at her with rage.

3.       Brink n, the edge of a steep place or of a stretch of water/ the point just before an event or state
- Brink of adolescence

4.       Mild :
1 Not serious : The pain is often associated with a vague deep ache in the limb, sometimes mild tingling, but rarely numbness or weakness.
2 (of weather) fairly warm : With a comfort rage starting at 2 degree Celcius  , this bag will see you through early spring into a mild autumn.
3 not strong in flavor : The sweet mild flavor of acacia honey matches your delicate emotions
4 gentle : I give her a mild smile.

5.       Recognition :
1 the act of recognizing : Her research is focuses on anion recognition in water.
2 appreciation or acknowledgement : The talented sports people will be awarded a Hallmark Award in recognition of their sporting achievement.

6.       Revitalize : (revive) come or bring back to life, consciousness, or strength. Syn : resuscitate
- She was revitalized by his inspiring words.

7.       Endorse : 1 declare approval of 2 sign a cheque on the back 3 record an  offence on a driving license

8.       Clip :
- n  device for holding things together in place : Mary compiles the papers together using a paper clip.
- v  fasten with a clip : Suzy clips her shawl on the hanger so that it won’t fall when blown by the wind.

9.       Astound : v. amaze
- The results of their negotiations might astound even hard-core conservationists.

10.   Flinch : v. make a nervous movement in pain or fear; shrink from something
- We do not flinch in the face of any difficulties.

11.   Shrewd :  adj. showing good judgement
- The fact is he was a natural musician and also a shrewd businessman, as we shall see.

12.   Absurd : adj. ridiculous syn: nonsensical, ludicrous, lunatic
- Nancy was being totally absurd when she bought ten bottles of carbonated drinks for her two middle-aged guests.

13.   Scarlet : brilliant red
- She was so delighted to read the content of the scarlet letter she received from her secret admirer.

14.   Glen : n. a narrow valley
- They walked all the way through glens and bushes to reach the remote village.

15.   Clasp : n. a device for fastening things, with interlocking parts; a grasp or handshake v. grasp tightly; embrace closely; fasten with a clasp
- The case is made up of weatherproof material with a clasp fastener at the front for easy access.

16.   Kilt : n. a knee-length shirt of pleated tartan cloth, traditionally worn by Highland men
- She was him with his light blue kilt with a dagger in his hand.

17.   Medallion : n. a pendant shaped like a medal
- The golden medallion was inherited from her great grandparents and it possesses a great magical power.

18.   Sheath : n. a cover for the blade of a knife or a tool
- The hideous guard took out his dagger from its sheath with rage and anger.

19.   Stallion : n. an uncastrated male horse
- She misses her black stallion, which may have been dead by now.

20.   Nudge : v.
 1. Prod with the elbow to attract attention : He gave Daniel a little nudge with his shoulder.
 2. Push gently : It seems that I was given a nudge in the direction I’m meant to take.

21.   Clan : n. a group of families with a common ancestor
- the clan of Highlander people set up a big camp near the foothill .

22.   Pledge : n. 1 a solemn promise; something deposited as a guarantee that a debt will be paid etc
- I give you the pledge that we will listen  to your deliberations today with very great care.

23.   Loch : n. a lake; an arm of the sea
- Offers everything for which you dream o holiday; spacious loch and mountain view bedrooms and a relaxed convivial ambiance.

24.   Substantial adj.
 1 strongly built or made; of considerable size, importance, or value : It was a substantial four-storey building of stone, with one end abutting on the river.
 2 concerning the essence of something : Those too busy to plan deposit accounts may have built up substantial balances.

25.   Reins :
n. 1 long straps attached to a bridle, used to control a  horse : Have you tried to walk her on a long, loose rein to get her stretch and relax ?
 2 the power to direct and control : The ruling elite in Europe had to figure out a way to rein back control of the planet.

26.   Communal : adj. shared among a group
- If you live in a building with a communal ariel I’d advise you to get your own one put up !

27.   Resent : v. feel bitter towards or about
- Ordinary citizens resent the intrusion of government into intimate decisions.

28.   Dispute : v. argue or debate; question the truth of; compete for. n. a debate or disagreement
- She didn’t show any sign of dispute towards her father’s words.

29.   Covet : v.(coveted, coveting) desire a thing belonging to another person. adj. covetous  syn : desire
- We are not to covet the things, or material possessions of our neighbor.

30.   Avenue : n. a wide road, usu. tree-lined
- The avenue was so dark and creepy at night.

31.   Dagger : n. a short pointed weapon used for stabbing
- He took out his shiny dagger and cut her hair until her scalp can be clearly seen.

32.   Trickle : v. flow in a thin stream; come or go gradually n. a trickling flow
- Her warm blood from her fresh wound trickles onto her light turquoise dress.

33.   Creek : n. a narrow inlet of water
- The stranger excuses himself to pee at the creek behind the trees.

34.   Clench : v. close the teeth or fingers tightly
- He had his teeth clenched tightly to endure the pain of his wounds from the war.

35.   Subside : v. sink to a lower or normal level; become less intense
- Symptoms usually subside within 48 hours of the initial onset.

36.   Fleeting : adj. passing quickly
- Their testimony is not based on a fleeting glimpse in a crowd.

37.   Shred : n. a small strip torn or cut from something
- Shreds of her torn and dirty dress were everywhere on the ground when the guard first found her after she was attacked by wild koyotes.

38.   Halt : v. come or bring to a stop n. a temporary stop
- His steps were suddenly halted in the sight of a gorgeous young woman standing before his eyes.

39.   Hamlet : n. a small village
- The stray fisherman ended up in a hamlet which lives deep in the jungle.

40.   Halitosis : n. breath that smells unpleasant
- His halitosis breath really annoys those who talk to him.
